As an instructional designer, it is my job to engage learners in active instruction that allows them the opportunity to participate in and therefore remember the key content. To that end, technology can be a useful tool. However, as Tim Cook, CEO of Apple Inc., says, “It’s not technology for technology’s sake”. Every bit of technology that is purchased and used should be because it is the best and most useful way. Technology should not be used just as a substitution for a traditional educational method, but rather harnessed for its strengths. Where does technology shine? What is technology good for in the training environment? One of the most obvious uses is online educational opportunities. This area is fascinating as a useful method of opening up the classroom environment to include learners no matter their locale. Creative and engaging eLearning and mLearning is an avenue to reach many that would not otherwise be reached. My current focus in instructional design is building my skills in this arena in order to increase my ability to create highly interactive virtual learning experiences.
